    Thu 27 May 2021

So, back on Monday we had our first Special Visitor in school for 15 months - Andrea Mills – successful children’s author and ex-Wickham Common pupil. It was wonderful to see her, hear her latest story and enjoy witness our children demonstrate their extensive, deep knowledge and love of Reading … as the children answered so many questions with such enthusiasm I could see their teachers brimming with pride! Well done to you all for encouraging and supporting this – the world’s most powerful and crucial life skill!

  • Saturday 10th July - The Wickham Common Summer Fair

    Thu 29 Apr 2021

As I mentioned earlier this week, the PTA are planning their first full-on fundraising event of the year for Saturday 10th July - The Wickham Common Summer Fair – with maybe a Football or an Olympics theme?! If you would be willing to help in some way then you could either send a message to your year group WhatsApp group and your rep will let the PTA committee know. Or you could email the PTA directly on wickhamcommonpta@gmail.com. Or you could join us on the 24th May and/or the 21st June when we will be having an evening Zoom meeting (details nearer the time). We will be discussing the Summer Fair and everyone’s ideas, who’s doing what etc … please do ‘come along virtually’ to these events if you are interested. If no to all of the above at the very least please do put the date in your diary -10th July - and come to the fair.

One of our very best friends who has already offered to donate a big cash first prize for the Fair Raffle is Abdul at Inaga Contemporary Indian Cuisine Restaurant around the corner. I am proud and delighted to share the following link with you, which tells of Abdul’s phenomenal success and what a fantastic and supportive friend and neighbour he is to this school. Well done Abdul – you deserve every accolade! I for one will be partaking of his menu this weekend.

  • VISTA

    Thu 29 Apr 2021

So onto other news … our local magazine called VISTA which is circulated to 4000 local homes once every term has a new Team running it! We have Chris & Stacey running the Editorial section and Sarah & Cat running the Sales, together with Tracey who does the invoicing – a very important role because we need the money!!! Mr Slack sorts out the articles produced by school pupils and staff. We are delighted to have this new team whose skills are 100% perfect for the job. We are also very grateful to Shabana and Izzie and all those who have gone before in the production of this popular and local magazine that advertises and also fundraises for the school! You can look forward to receiving the new team’s first edition towards the end of June … look out for that.

If you feel able to deliver copies on your road, please do email the PTA (email address above) or get a message to Rachel Aviss who coordinates the delivery and she will sign you up … every little helps! Thanks.

  • Visit www.wickhamcommonprimary.co.uk today

    Tue 12 Jan 2021

Go onto the tab COVID-19 and on there you will see several sections with pre-recorded

videos made by Wickham Common staff.

There are stories read by Mrs Critten, Ms

Norsworthy, Mrs Moore, Ms NiGhosain, Mr Slack,

Mr Walker, Mr Winter, Mrs Myles, Mrs Stevenson,

Ms Miran, Mrs Ringham – to name a few! These

stories are wonderful for children in many year

groups to sit and watch/listen, so please do show

your child how to access, settle down somewhere

cosy with a warm drink and enjoy!

There are also some modelled Maths lessons on there – again for all to tap into and

practice. Mr Slack and Mr Grice are modelling a variety of methods and these are well worth

looking at for children Year 2 upwards.

There are 62 videos of teachers modelling writing – they demonstrate how to

construct text types and also presentation ... Writing when

completed at home is notoriously poor quality compared to what

children can produce in school and this is why we rarely set

writing as home learning. However, in such times as these we

cannot allow children to totally disengage with their writing

skills. Please look at these videos and see which ones you and

    your child could practise.

There are also PE lessons, French lessons, Phonics demos, interviews with authors,

podcasts, Music lessons with our colleagues at BYMT and of course our wonderful

Celebration films – around 15 in total I think. These have been made from April to December

and are suitable for everyone to sit and enjoy – they vary in length.

  • Lockdown learning programme

    Tue 12 Jan 2021

Yesterday the BBC started with their Lockdown learning programme – here is a link to it –

take a peek and see how this can help you and your child.

  • The Oak National Academy

    Tue 12 Jan 2021

On myUSO the children in Years 1-6 have been directed to visit pre-recorded

lessons produced by The Oak National Academy and also The White Rose

Maths Hub to support their learning. These are highly recommended,

    professionally produced films.

Wickham Common staff have also begun to make new videos of themselves

reading stories, going on walks, doing PE and demonstrating how to do

Phonics/Maths, introducing the week’s learning timetable. Some of these may

be viewed on the website via the Covid link, others will have a direct link only

via myUSO for children and parents specifically in that teacher’s class/year

    group to watch.

If directed to watch a video as part of a lesson children must do so in order to be able to

compete the task set properly. This means that laptops will need speakers/earphones.
